Looks like I posted this same thing twice sorry.....
Hello! First off I am a DIYer. Was wondering what you guys normally do when you encounter a dripping Delta shower valve like this to remove those REALLY STUBBORN chrome caps to replace washers and springs. First off, I have successfully done it before a couple of times using techniques like soaking the chrome cap in vinegar as well as heating the chrome cap with a propane torch. I do know that you are not supposed to "muscle" it off since you can damage the small pipes in the valve. How do plumbers usually handle this issue? Split the chrome nut and then get a new chrome nut? I would have to believe that at some point it makes more sense economically to replace the entire shower valve than to work at trying to get that chrome cap off. Also can the shower valve be replaced through that hole or does it usually require drywall removal from the other side? Thanks so much for all your help!
