Commercial laundry facility in MA. Replaced existing cast iron waste/vent piping with PVC.

Question is whether this is code compliant.

MA plumbing code 10.06(h) says – Storm and Sanitary Above Ground… says PVC is acceptable.
but... 10.06(2) says piping for renovations or alterations within an existing soil stack, waste stack, vent stack or drain, the fitting or piping shall be of the same material as the existing stack or drain

If anyone has any experience with this would appreciate it. Thanks

The way I read that is that you don't and can't go from say CI-PVC-CI, but, if you're replacing bits, it's okay above ground to go from PVC into existing CI. Then again, I'm not an inspector or licensed plumber! Safe thing is to ask the inspector before you do the work. IOW, you wouldn't want PVC in between two sections of CI. Note, the expansion ratio of CI and PVC are quite different, and the PVC will change dimensions much more radically with temperature changes. The PVC will also be a lot noisier than the CI when draining things.

Within a stack or drain you can't switch. Mass has some odd things so best ask inspector. I would say yes you can replace a whole system with pvc and hook on to cast iron. But ask. There are some fire considerations also.
