I'm installing rough in drains on my new home. I tend to lean towards the more the merrier when it comes to clean outs within reason of course. My question is when installing a cleanout tee on a horizontal drain line that is passing through a wall at what angle should the cap face?
I have to follow IPC and UPC standards. In all the research I've done I can't seem to come up with a concrete yes on no on facing it any direction including facing the cap straight down.
My thoughts on the matter are as follows: If the cap is oriented facing straight up in the wall it would require a large access hole, be very difficult to remove the cap, and be even more difficult to get a snake started. Facing it downward would be dumb for several reasons. Facing it straight outward (flush with the sheet rock) would make for the easiest access and ability to cover it nicely. However my concern is will crud get caught on the side of it and pile up? The option I'm currently leaning towards is to face it upward at a 45° angle thus leaving a pretty smooth drain bottom and a decent access through the sheet rock to get a snake into. Any possible code violation thoughts and or best practice thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
