Cap on threads of pitless? Help please

Hi there from Montana. Need to pull this well pump and find that I can't seem to accces the current adapters threads with a bar and male 1" threads so I can pull this. The photo seems to show some kind of cap or plugs, possible for thread protection. It looks to me like maybe that should have been removed before the pump was lowered into the adapter. I recall my wife and I lowering this down in with our tractor bucket and having a bad time. My friend says the adapter should have 1" female threads to receive the rod we would then pull it out with?

Looks like maybe a 1x3/4 bushing screwed into pitless. Try 3/4 pipe.
