Any tips for getting supply pipe in the coupler with tank below?

I think all I can do is hope the pipe gives enough for me to raise it up and push it into the final coupler? Seems really tricky.

You need a copper slip coupling. Almost the same as a normal coupling but it has no stop inside, enabling you to slide it back all the way onto a pipe (instead of stopping you when pipe gets halfway into the fitting).

Thanks. I feel so ignorant for not knowing about the slip coupler without the notches! I ended up using a flex hose on the hot side, and a union on the cold side. I had a slip coupler and thought, gee whiz this cheap POS wasn't notched!
