Adding a shower

Putting in a shower and it just so happens that the placement is directly above my main sewage line. To plumb into this, I'm assuming I'll need a P trap to keep sewage gasses out. But what I'm unsure about it whether I'll need a vent pipe. It's basically a 16 in drop to the main.

Also, I couldn't figure out the avatar thing, but I'm in California.

You will need a p-trap and that will need to be vented. The p-trap holds water in the low part which is your seal against moist smelly air coming up from the sewer. The venting of the trap breaks the siphon which can suck that p-trap dry.
