I bought an old house a few years ago and it appears that the previous owner had a bit of a plumbing fetish. There is an old 5 gallon tank bolted to the wall and a rear discharge "commercial style" bowl also bolted to the wall. There is no pedestal for the bowl. The tank and bowl are connected by a flexible coupling (because they are not exactly aligned horizontally). It is rear discharge clearly to have fall to get to the waste line (it is a basement bathroom). The toilet will operate under most conditions, but will not flush the densest of solids. The water just bypasses it and causes it to dance (which I view as mocking me). Short of eating more fiber, I don't know what to do other than buy a whole new, pressure assist rear discharge toilet - to the tune of 700 bucks. Is there any advice anyone has? You can't retrofit a toilet like this with a flushmate can you? Any info would be much apppreciated.

Thanks!

Most of the new rear discharge toilets can be had for about $500
I sell both the American Standard Glenwall and the Gerber rear outlet in the Seattle area.

I would love to see a picture posted of what you have.
It's got to be an honorable mention in the Plumbing Hall of Shame.
