What type of handles are these and how do you get them off?

We are trying to replace the tub surround and for the little of us we cannot get the handles off.

Any tips on how to remove these?

The two holes in the handles may suggest that there used to be two screws holding the handles.
With an adjustable wrench try to wiggle them out.
