Water Softener Cleansers

I purchased a Whirlpool water softener and the owners manual recommends adding their brand of 24oz liquid water softener cleanser every 4 months. Other companies offer gallon size bottles of liquid resin cleaner for not much more $. Would a resin cleaner function the same as a water softener cleanser and be a better value?

Do you have significant iron or other particular problem? Softener/Resin cleaning every 4 months is not common.

No I don't. It's just that the owners manual strongly suggests purchasing their high priced water softener cleanser because it will extend the warranty period. I've never heard of a product such as this before either.
