Have a weird periodic noise coming from my pipes and have no idea what is causing it. Never really noticed it during the day but at night when it’s quiet I hear this short single creaking noise every 3-4 minutes sounding like it’s coming from my pipes in the bathroom. The pipes are all copper, all of my pipes are located on one side of the house as the bathrooms on each floor and kitchen are all near each other. Can’t tell if it’s coming from a hot or cold line. It happens when no water is running and seems to happen even when no water tap has been opened for quite a while.

Previously I would hear that same creaking noise when a toilet was flushed which was a series of quick creaks for about 4-5 seconds but I turned off the water, opened the faucets to drain the system and then turned the water back on which seemed to resolve it. Think that particular problem started after the city had shut off the water a few times while doing work down the street. But that single short periodic creak noise is persisting, any ideas on what it could be?

Check toilet fill valves, flappers in the toilet tank and pressure reducing valve if you have one.

The creaking noise is often from heat expansion/contraction causing the pipe to rub against holes in the wood framing. It is usually more prevalent when water is used. Less often it is from changes in pressure. A good plumber would drill over-sized holes so that the pipe is free to move. Some plumbers even put in plastic bushings.

To eliminate the toilet, you could shut off the supply valve at the wall as a test.
