Your schematic is correct, but you can only make splices in junction boxes. So if you draw a big box around each receptacle in your schematic, so that each sconce is served by a 12/2 from the box below, you'll see that the bottom right box has a 12/3 coming in and a 12/2 going out to the sconce above.

Hi Wayne, I finally got to wiring the outlets/sconces today according to my proposed diagram. Everything worked according to plan, except that the upper right wall sconce is hot at all times. The left wall sconce is controlled by the wall switch, which is exactly what I wanted and all the outlets are working properly. So the only issue is the upper right lighting fixture not being controlled by the wall switch. Any idea where I went wrong in my wiring? I keep looking at the diagram, but everything looks correct to me. Thanks for your time.

In the lower right receptacle box, you should have the red connected to the black going to the sconce above it. And in the lower left receptacle box, you should have the red from the switch connected to the black to the sconce above and the red going to the lower right receptacle box.

If you do, it will work as expected. So since it's not working as expected, one of those two connections is not right.

Thank you, Wayne! I ended up troubleshooting everything today- turns out my wiring was correct after all. It was merely a faulty contact-less voltage detector that gave me erroneous readings. Hooked up the sconces and everything works great. :) Thank you again for all your help. Truly appreciate it!
