Replacing the supply line to a water heater and contemplating the water heater shutoff valve placement. I was thinking about installing the ball valve (https://www.supplyhouse.com/Watts-88005688-LFFBV-3C-M1-3-4-Full-Port-Threaded-Ball-Valve-Lead-Free) directly to the water heater to avoid extra parts. This is an electric unit and pex is permitted directly to the unit in my area. I know there are some PTFE parts but that material is rated to 400 degrees if I recall correctly. Only thing I can thing is maybe a slightly quicker wear on the part if it is warm but I cannot imagine it is significant if at all.

Any reason not to install ball directly onto water heater?

You want have valve before a union or a flex line. That way only the cold water line needs to closed for service do not install any valve on the hot line. Valve you listed is rated 400° @ 600lbs on the submittal sheet. It's a commercial valve.
