After struggling to understand what was wrong with the master bath shower, I changed the cartridge on the Danze valve about 10 months ago. It worked great until two weeks ago. What has happened is that it now has very little range between full hot and not hot enough. It used to be that the "comfort zone" was about 1/4 rotation of the handle; now it is more like 1/4 inch. I contacted Danze which has provided great customer support, and they are mailing me both a new cartridge and two new check valves. Having changed the cartridge on this and other valves before, that strikes me as an easy task, but I'm a bit nervous about changing the check valves. Do you think they really need to be changed? Do the symptoms sound more like a bad check valve, a bad cartridge, or both?

It is easy enough for check valves to get fouled (depending on the size and water conditions). So nobody will be able to answer your question. with the right sized deep socket, changing a check valve should be a breeze.
you can do one item at a time and tell us what you discover.

When you change cart and checks throw then vinegar over night rinse them. Mineral deposits should be gone or soft easy to clean off. Try them after 10 months when the new ones fail. Need to get get the water hardness checked.

The problem with your shower could be the cartridge or the check valves. The small range between hot and cold could mean the cartridge is worn out, even though you replaced it 10 months ago. Sediment or wear could cause this. The check valves, which control water pressure and prevent backflow, could also be causing the issue. Since Danze is sending you both a new cartridge and check valves, it’s a good idea to replace both. Changing check valves should be easy for you since you’ve already replaced the cartridge before.
