I am remodeling my bathroom and removed a bathtub to convert to a shower. The photo is what the piping tied into the main looks like. Without removing part of the main, can I cut the 1 1/2 pipe where it meets the wye and cut the inside of it? (Circled. It looks like it is a 2inch reducing to the 1 1/2inch.

probably. We cut out pipe from fittings all the time. Never have I tried it with a bushing and they are specifically made to ream PIPE. Will need a very excellent cutter.
The RamBit is a cheap tool that I wouldn't think will do the job. Maybe the Reed Clean Ream Extreme. you will need a high torque slow speed drill.

With a bushing you'll have to do some surgery but it can be done. A lot of codes allow a new shower that is replacing a bathtub to be 1.5" pipe if the enclosure is under a certain size and your only have one shower head.

If your gonna get a shower like that I recommend you get some replacement parts to keep on hand. Extra spray heads, cartridge for the valve and so on. They likely won't be available when the shower starts to break.

Either that or go with a common reputable name brand that will be available for service parts in ten years.
