I also think that price sounds reasonable. When he puts the dirt back, you want topsoil on top if you have clay below.

It is pretty common to throw the old pipe into the trench before filling the trench in. Plus expect the dirt to compact with time, unless they pound the dirt with sledgehammers as they go. It is typical to leave a mound on top, and that will probably turn into a little valley with time.
