Recently bought this house, shortly after moving in starting noticing strong sewer smells, always at night and seemingly worse with hot days and cool nights.
I have read all the posts about potential problems to look for and I am currently in that process. My specific question is, does the height the the vent pipe extends above the point of exit from the roof effect how well it vents? I have heard that it does. All thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Make sure there is water in all of the traps.

Try to isolate smells by closing doors, and/or covering drains or other suspects with a cheap plastic drop cloth. After a period of time, see which side of the plastic the smell is stronger at.
