Good Morning.

I have a problem that I’m looking for some advice on.

I did a complete bathroom remodel about 15 years ago that included stripping everything down to joists and studs. As a part of that I installed and American Standard Cadet toilet. Recently the appears to be a popping or cracking noise from beneath the toilet when you stand up from it. The noise does not occur when standing and bouncing around the toilet.

I thought it was the toilet seat and replaced it, but clearly that wasn’t it.

The tile shows no signs of failure and was installed over a fresh solid subfloor with ditra.

The toilet seems solid when I attempt to move it from side to side and the closet bolts are secure.

Can anybody help point me in the right direction?

Thanks for any and all assistance.

Was there by any chance adhesive pads included with the toilet seat mounting hardware? Even if there wasn't there's a possibility that the seat bolts just need tightening.

The gasket material (with or without adhesive) could stick slightly to the porcelain, and then from having weight applied, to releasing the weight they're returning to their unflexed state?

Just a thought, but the description of 'popping sound' fits the criteria.

Plus, even with the Ditra, and no apparent grout or tile cracking there may well be some movement occurring, and it may be a very small movement. If there is a wall, or vanity near the toilet, try this:

Take a flat piece of wood and attach a 'mast' to it; something with a very straight edge that can be placed within inches of either side of the toilet, and will stand vertically by itself. If you can measure from one of the vertical edges to the side of the vanity countertop, or to a wall, ACCURATELY, take a measurement while there is no weight on the toilet, and then sit down to see if the measurement changes even by 1/64".

It doesn't matter how much, but framed floors, even done well, have a certain amount of flex, and a popped nail, hidden, doesn't require much movement to make a lot of noise.
