Hey….I am new to this forum and Just to be clear, I do not know a lot about plumbing but I am the type of person that doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty, so What I’m trying to say is I have no clue what’s going on but I’m willing to listen and learn in order to find a solution to this problem. I’m just going to go ahead and be honest with you….I am sorta in a panic now bc I procrastinated on dealing w this issue and now I am very nervous bc this could turn out to be more serious than I thought. I am normally not someone to ignore a problem but the past year has just been one thing after the other….literally, as soon as one problem is down, five more have popped up, and I’m starting to get a little overwhelmed. We have lived in this house for seven years w few problems….until this last year, and then everything started going wrong.
Our house was built in 1962, mid century style. Several months ago my wife’s mother was coming to visit and in our second bathroom, the shower wasn’t working but the tub was, so I was going to replace the faucet and shower head so people could have the option to shower if they wanted to. Well, I thought it would be easy….nope. As soon as I twisted the tub faucet off I realized that none of the faucets at Lowe’s would fit on the pipe. There was barely any pipe extending past the tile to even attach a new faucet to and I couldn’t even get the old one back on. So, I postponed the project and told my in-laws to be careful in the shower bc the faucet might fall off and shoot water straight out at you from the wall. And as usual, there was never a good time to go back and fix it. And I’ll go ahead and say it…..we have ZERO extra funds to hire someone to do ANYTHING. Anything that goes wrong here is on me. It just is what it is….tough times.
A couple of months ago my daughter tells me that her floor is wet in the area where the tub is on the other side of the wall. I think this was around the time that we were having to replace the hvac system that was $9k and I don’t pay much attention to it at the time. Well, it has continued and today I went up under the house and below the tub water is leaking down into the crawl space so there is obviously a leak inside the wall behind the tub. And I can’t just shut the water to the tub off. I would have to shut the water off to the house. So my question is …..do I start by cutting into the wall behind the tub. In the tub is tile but I could go in from my daughters bedroom. Is that the first step? Any idea what I might be getting into here? I am prepared to do this but I would love some advice from anyone who might know something about this. Another thing i will point out is on both the tub and the sink in this bathroom, I cannot completely get the water to stop coming out of the faucets. There’s always a little trickle of water coming out.
