Katalox iron filter

I have two 1.5 cu ft katalox light iron filters in series, two person household. Literature says katalox should last up to 10 years but I have to replace it after two. It becomes a solid block at the bottom of each cylinder that I have to break up to replace. The system recharges every three days. Is there another media that would last longer? Needless to say I have really bad well water.
