I was finishing up some crawlspace encapsulation and when I was near the sewer pipe as it goes underground, I smelled a dead animal smell That wasn't there a few weeks ago. I would be sure it was a rodent except of the proximity to the sewer pipe. Is there a way to test this? The dirt around it is dry. It is a 4" soil pipe, approx. 90 years old. No drain issues. Thanks in advance for your time.

To properly test sewer pipe you need a way to plug it off and fill it with water.

Otherwise you can dump peppermint oil strategically this takes two people to be sure that ther person handling thre oil doesn't bring thre smell into the house with them.

Or there is a smoke test which isn't as common these days.

I'm sure Google has some good instructions for these tests.
