Hot water only from shower

Think the issue exists since the time we had the shower added to a powder. My daughter uses this bathroom and she never told us that only hot water comes out of the shower, irrespective of which side you turn the handle. Or it may have started soon after we had the work done. Would this likely be a cartridge or a balancing spool issue? Unfortunately, the hole also isn’t large enough to get the spool out so will have to expand the hole if it’s a spool issue. There’s also all this mortar around the spool area…could that actually be the issue? Including a pic. Thanks!

no the extra tile and grout , mortar whatever arent hurting anything . but yea you need to at least verify both the hot and cold stops are open and if all you have is hot then replace the spool its the big sloted thing on the right bust out tile as needed

My Guess is your pressure balancing spool is frozen and should be replaced. The spool has a piston inside that slides back and forth opening and closing the hot and cold ports. when this becomes calcified the piston cant move and regulate the temperature. order the spool and the cartridge and change them both so you have a fresh install. cart = 1225 (plastic) and the spool =1423.

check that the stops are open first but yea normaly its the spool

A pressure balance valve shouldn't work if either of the stops are in the off position. The balance spool is likely stuck.

right ballance spool maybey better dont even touch the stops

Thank you all! Had a handyman over for something else and he also thinks it’s the spool. He called moen for me and they’re actually sending a replacement spool and a cartridge as well for free! The handyman also made the opening a bit bigger to get to the spool.
