only needs water resistance on the board and thinset other wize the redguard and hydrodefence would be outta buisness no one would use it. it wont be 100 percent water proof around that window ice block or what ever it is anyway. way up at the cieling I wouldnt expect a problem . These are thoughts from a plumber A tile guy might and would think differant as Ive seen some of the stuff they do a lot of it is horrible. john bridge forum is very good for showers and tile a You Tube channel I like is Tile coach. my gut says that high up you would be safe but definately isnt my Gig

I talked with Hardie when installing a new tub and surround a couple of years ago. You should only use mortar and fiberglass mesh tape to fill gaps, with one exception: a seam between Hardie board and sheet rock can be filled with drywall mud (I used mortar anyway, and it worked fine). If you do use mud, definitely use setting-type, not pre-mix.

Call the company. Thinset isn't waterproof. Mortor is. Screws your using look like deck screws. Screws might not be the correct ones or the framing might leave gaps between the board and the wood.

I’m using the hardie green screws that they recommend. I’ll plan on using mortor for the cracks.
