I am about to rip out our old 1968 master bathroom shower to the studs and remodel. I am concerned that after I get the pan out and have access to the old pipes, once I cut the old P trap out, how do I go about transitioning this to plastic for my new shower drain?
I have heard of mission coupling or essentially ferncos with an outer metal sleeve? Is this correct?

Yes, a shielded coupling designed to fit the types of pipe you are connecting.

Thank you. Is the difference between this and a regular Fernco coupling just the rigidity it provides?

~2" long shielded rubber couplings are for use above grade only.

~4" long rubber couplings are for use below grade only. They are available shielded or unshielded.

Hi Wayne,
Sorry for this potentially ridiculous question lol.

Is above and below grade referring to ground level or just my floor level? This is on an upstairs remodel and of course will be under the subfloor so not sure if that is considered above grade or below grade?

Grade is ground level, so for a raised story you need the above grade coupling, e.g. Fernco Proflex or Mission Band-Seal.

The ~4" long unshielded below grade version is designed to be continuously supported by soil or other backfill.

Cheers, Wayne
