My AC has been working fine throughout the heat wave until today. The condenser fan was working but making a terrible noise. I noticed that the air handler circulator fan was no longer working. I turned the system off for a while and restarted but there were no changes. I turned off the condenser breaker and switched the thermostat to the fan mode which didn't turn on. I turned off the air handler breaker and manually started the compressor through the contactor which ran freely without making any noise. I turned the condenser breaker off and the air handler breaker back on. The minute I turned the breaker on the air handler began to hum. I'm assuming that either the capacitor or circulator fan motor is bad. There is no way for me to get into the attic to reach the air handler. I have a friend who is much smaller and a contortionist who has helped me in the past. If the circulating fan stopped working, I assume that the evaporator would freeze, if so, would that cause the compressor to make a terrible noise while the air handler is powered yet stop making the noise with it off and turned on manually through the contactor? I am a homeowner and not a service tech and would appreciate any advice.

If the coil froze up fan wouldn't move any air and might not here anything. Some needs to diagnose the fan with a meter. Just to many things it could be. Thermostat power the G terminal to energise the fan relay that powers the fan on high speed.

I'm unable to get to the air handler and I hear a humming sound. I have to wait for a friend to assist and do as you suggest.
Thank you for your reply.
