Can you Cut Waste Drain Tailpiece to length to fit?

I am replacing an old 1 1/2 P Trap and Tailpiece and the new Tailpiece is about an inch to long can you cut it to fit. Should I also replace the straight drain pipe that comes down from the old double utility cement sink being it is 70 years old?

I sometimes need to cut the tail pieces if they are too long, and sometimes they are too short and I use an extension.
I also make sure that the downside of the p-trap that goes to the wall is not too long either. Basic measurement if cut at the wall, no longer than that.
I have pulled p-traps on sinks that aren't draining and the plumber before me didn't cut it short enough, and it was touching the far side of the santee in the wall with no place for the water to go.

Thanks, But the Drain does not go into a Wall but into the Basement Cement Floor with a Threaded Pipe which has a 90 at the top of the Threaded Pipe. I have it partially back together But have a Slight Leak I have attempted to tight all 3 Nuts but each time I tighten any of the 3 Nuts it twists the p trap and tailpiece. I will take it apart and change the Beveled Slight Joint Washers that are new and see if that stops the leak at the Top. Maybe even replace the short pipe that is Attached to the bottom of utility sink drain where it looks like leak is coming from. Just in a bad spot getting to the connections for a non plumber. But needed to get the Washer working as the Sink started Backing up and Did Not Drain even over night and tried a couple drain snake tools but none would make the 90 after the P Trap. When I started removing the P Trap the Old Trap Pipe split open. IT was my day to make 4 trips to Home Depot 1 for a Power Drain Auger, another for the new P Trap and Tailpiece, the 3rd for a plastic Hair Snake in hopes of making it pass the 90 and see if anything was clogging up that part of the Drain and the 4th for a couple of Carpet Squares to lay on to assemble the new P Trap on the wet floor... Not much with Plumbing But trying to keep my home functioning...
