what seals the connection between brass tailpipe and PVC rough-in? There’s a sixteenth inch gap

Will this drain stuff stay accessible? If so, you can use slip joint connections to a new trap adapter at the floor and a box escutcheon, as Wayne said. If the area becomes inaccessible after the tub is in, you are supposed to use glued connections.

Well I’m the dummy that finished the floor around all this stuff before sorting out all the fittings, so I guess I could dig back in and do it, ahem, right. Retile etc. Got lots of leftovers. It’s a claw foot tub. The pvc is a trap. Goes down 9” before turning.

Good to see that, so slip joint is approprieate. Nice job on the tile.

The trap adapter will probably give you that height boost that you need. You can get a box escutcheon in black.
