The spacing of the joints and the fact that it is still "round" implies that it is vitrified clay tile pipe.

That looks like Orangeburg pipe. I've seen it have those lumps while still being round.

Plus, the color makes me think it's not clay.

VCP clay pipes were commonly used in CA years ago.
It looks like roots at 40 ft. plus possible pieces of the pipe.
Earthquakes and earth movements do break clay pipes.

It's possible that it's a pipe that has a cured-in-place pipe lining.
