Another Fireplace question

Got a gas fireplace up and running. But shut it off because there is a dial surface mounted on top above glass. Says open close. Im assuming its a damper. If so why would you have that option? Wouldn't if be dangerous if a kid closed it while it was running

Yes it would. CO detector would be a good to have. It’s better to install CO detectors at least five feet above the ground or a few feet below the ceiling.
