Shower arm issue

I had a handyman install a new shower. The pipe you thread the shower arm onto is recessed inside the wall. So to screw on the shower arm, I push the shower arm inside the drywall. My issue is, if it's leaking, how would I know since the joint between the two pieces is inside the wall?
Is there an adapter to put on to make it come out of the wall a couple inches, so I can screw on the shower arm?
If not, is there a way to fix it?

Thanks,
Cheryl

Normally you have an escutcheon that slides back which may allow you to see. However, nobody really does that. Three wraps with tape and thread it in.
I like to thread the head on first to allow me more leverage when I hand spin it in. After it's centered, then I make sure the shower head is firm to the end of the threads. The threads in the wall I know are tight.
