Plumbing stop

My plumbing stop is "crunchy". I believe its a 3/8 - 1/2 compression stop. If I change it I'm worried about the 1/2 side leaking.

You have plenty of room there to cut the copper and install a new compression stop there.
Look to see how much length you need before cutting though when you have the new stop in hand.
Some of the new stops don't have as much depth inside the fitting, and then it's impossible to snug it down using the old nut.

It takes either two wrenches, or at least pliers and a wrench. The back nut needs to be tight.

I would first try not replacing the nut and ferrule, just swap out with a new valve. Technically, half inch copper is called 5/8" comp. (that is the actual o.d.)
