Water Softener Issue

I have two issues and think one is causing the other. The water pressure in the house is reduced when 2 water sources are on at the same time. Also, my water starts to get hard about halfway through a regeneration cycle. I was told that chlorine must be building up on my resin beads, which is why my soft water doesn't last as long and the cause of my reduced water pressure. I was advised to get an in-house granular activated carbon filter, which the water would flow through the carbon filter before it enters the water softener. Have you ever had anyone with similar issue and installed one of those in-house carbon filters? If so, any direction on which brands are good? Thank you.
