I have a new Rheem electric water heater that I am preparing to connect to the water lines.

The T&P relief valve located in the top points to the rear (the side opposite the junction box and heating elements). But I want it to point to the left front. Should I rotate it clockwise 225 degrees or counterclockwise 125 degrees?

I would think clockwise/tighter is better but 225 degrees is a long way around--I'm not sure I could get that much rotation if the factory really torqued it.

Any recommendation or common practice on this? Thanks.

If it was factory installed, its better to remove it, apply new thread tape or dope and reinstall it in the orientation you need it to be.

Id follow Tuttles advice , however if when I went to looten it felt kinda loose , Id just tighten it the 220 degrees or whatever. but probebly have to unscrew it all the way
