Is there a way to pigtail a battery onto a stat that doesn't have battery backup? I need a way to supply it with just enough power if the house power goes out.

Probably not but would talk with a manufacturer tech of ups for a computer.
Could possibly wire it in to power the control transformer in furnace but not sure of the square wave power working with everything. Don't ever remember a electronic t stat not having a battery or capacitor for back up.
