I purchased my house last year and it is on a well. I have always had a well in my previous homes and even with a softener my water was noticeabley from a well (iron, smells, etc).

There is a water softener installed in my new home but it is a rental unit. It is only $30 a month but it adds up and I don't like having another micro subscription coming out of my bank account each month. This well is quite shallow and my home is surrounded by wetlands. The water report (attached) did not detect much of anything that makes me feel a softener is required.

I would like to get rid of the rental unit and replace it with my own....but with my water report do I even really need one at all? I have seen the whole house salt free systems and also multi-stage whole house filters. If I don't need to purchase and lug around salt that would be a plus.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated

Who took the sample for the water test? It looks like you/they have sampled the water after the softener, rather than before.

If you are going to test for coliform, you need special sampling procedures. It is easy to contaminate the sample.

It was an inspection that was setup by my realtor. I think the county health department does it. I should have thought about the kitchen sink being beyond the softener.

If I run out of salt here I don’t notice any difference in the water. In my previous houses I would immediately know it was out because you could feel a difference in the shower.
