I recently talked to someone who was telling me that you should NEVER use schedule 40 pipe and DWV fittings for sewer outside of the building. He said it will inevitable fail and SDR 35 or similar thinwall is superior. An excavator he knows insists it will break at the fittings.

I have definitely run sch40 for outside sewer before, especially in situations where it was not practical to get the separation of water and sewer required with thin wall pipe. Am I foolish to have used sch40 underground?

No sch 40 is better and stronger and allowed. the cheap stuff is not allowed in the building or as you mentioned next to potable water under certain conditions I wonder why?

That's what I had always assumed. I know how easy it is to break sdr 35 with a shovel or whatever so I always felt it was a big upgrade in strength. I suppose the bell end couplings create a more resilient joint there for earth movement and, if using gasketed, that should be very tolerant to shifting
