Evaluating water softeners and wondering about TDS testers

I'm brand new to this forum. I've read this site before, but only signed up just today. Found great info here on technical details regarding water softening. So thanks.

So, for grins I ordered the "Hach 145300 Total Hardness Test Kit, Model 5-B" since I saw it referenced on this site more than once.

My question is is there any merit and/or recommendation for a TDS tester?

A good tds tester is approximately $20. If you have an RO system then it is an important test tool to have.
