Curious: Can Pipe Dope Come in a Stick?

Just as I was on my way out this morning, noticed the gas-company guy pull a stick out of his back pocket and apparently rub it on the threads of a plug.

So didn't get a chance to ask; but after got back, noticed a white residue on the threads, and a perhaps vaguely familiar smell. No babies around here for a long time, but think the odor might be reminiscent of Desitin. Pretty sure that thread sealant usually contains some kind(s) of oil(s) - though not necessarily those recommended for diaper-rash.

Thanks very much. Never heard of anything except the brush-on type. Imagine a stick can be more convenient to carry around.
