We had a water heater I installed 5 years ago and it went out. The igniter made a spark but the pilot would not catch after it went out for some reason.
Usually, I do my own work but health issues came up so I just ordered a new one from a chain store because it could be installed that day.
It showed up a day or two later.

The company that came to install the new one said they old one went out because I put it in. And that it was too tall. It matched the one that preceded it for 10 or 20 years. Gas only. No electrical. The said it should be a shorter and fatter one. So I said OK. They put it in and it worked for less than 24 hours. Took another day or so to get them back over. It was spitting out an error code of ten blinks and the pilot would not light.
The owner of the company came out and replaced the box on the side. It took a day to get one and then he came in the next day to switch it out.
That one lasted two days and went out. Same error code.

Then another couple days went by and they replaced the entire water heater with another one just like it. They also replaced the top of the vent. That one lasted 2 days. Now it's dead with the same error code The igniter won't even spit out a spark to light the pilot.

The units are a Brandford white model number URG250L6N
Nothing has changed in our house in decades. Nothing changed when either of the new units went in. None are showing anything being moved ot disturbed or chewed on or anything remotely new.We also checked the reset button and it's not extended. Pushing it does nothing. We do have construction in the area but our heater and clothes drier are working fine.

At this point I'm finding it hard to believe they keep bringing faulty equipment or don't know how to install it. I've installed 4 heaters for myself and friends in the last 10 years and none of them have gone bad. I'm certainly open to ideas now. Anyone have any ideas?

So I'm at a loss as to what this problem could be caused by. My wife is a nurse and is washing with a tea kettle and sometimes gettting a shower or a cold one for over a week now.

Rule of thumb is 10-15 years. At 20 years you are well past its life expectancy. But the truth is no one knows for sure. But I've seen them go in 5 years and I've seen them last 25. Once I replaced a heater that was 50 years old and still in service. What I tell my customers after 10 years start to budget for a new one. I am a plumbing heating and cooling contractor of 20 years.
