White or clear caulking for a new toilet, plumbinghacks

New toilet..........should I use white or clear caulking. And how do I do a better job next time? This looks kind of messy to me. Just saying.

Looks like the cartridge was installed backwards in the the caulking gun.

95 per cent of that caulking can be removed, without too much trouble, using a single-edge razor
blade tool, such as is used to clean windows. The little that remains in the crevice between
toilet and floor will be adequate.
