I've been helping my brother with one of his rental properties. My brother has to repair two leaking shower drains in one of his mobile homes. When installing the new drains should he use silicone or plumbers putty? Also, what is the secret to connecting to a 1" meter at the road? We have a drip where our 1" PVC threaded male adapter connects to the union. Can you give me some pointers when working with unions? Thanks in advance. Keith.

I have been using Silicone for shower drains on pans.
Plumbers putty can dry out and leak over time.

Normally we have 3/4" threads at a water meter, but if it's 1", it's the same method.
You can wrap some white tape several times on the male adapter and thread that in.
A union can come with a rubber washer, or it may be two flat surfaces that mate up without a washer. Some plumbers will use a bit of pipe dope on those faces, others don't.
No tape should be used on a union.
