Bill, if by 'the best product' you mean most appropriate, that will be conditional on the specific water conditions.
The OP asked about iron removal using a whole house filter (cartridge, as signified by the 'changing it himself' requirement) or pitcher filter.
With regard to a pitcher for that purpose, that was answered in post #2. With regard to a whole house filter for that purpose, that was also addressed in post #2. KL (Katalox Light) will utilize a backwashing filter system for a whole home application, similar in appearance and size to a water softener. A comprehensive lab test on the raw water will be needed to determine the most appropriate method and size needed for the application.
