frozen water meter

iam plumbing a 2 bath house in ma and the water meter froze and burst, needs to be replaced. could anyone tell me the first step itake to get a new one. i have to call the town right, or should the homeowner call and set it up themself.

Why don't you call. If the city wants the homeowner to call, then pass the ball to him. It's not like you will get in trouble if it's not your place to make the call.

If it froze and burst they will be billing you for the replacement...You need to call your water supplier...

The only thing that should have broken is the freeze plate on the bottom. That is inexpensive and they usually replace it as part of their service.

I work for a city owned utility and we are responsible for everything up to and including the meter. In this case it wouldn't matter who called we would still come replace the meter free of charge.

Call the utility, as a poster indicated above they aren't going throw you in jail for calling.

They don't HAVE to replace the meter, just the cast or plastic bottom, but probably would because it was easier and they can then rehab the old meter.
