First time posting, long time follower of the site.

I've got what I think is a strange situation and I'm looking for advice before I sink any more money into a solution. A month ago I started to hear a loud rattling noise from my utility room when my washing machine was turning on (hot cycle only.) I tried to attach a video but it was too large. The noise sounded like it was coming from the venting pipe above my water heater, it was a shaking sound. It was very loud, could be heard from anywhere in the house. I was also able to replicate the noise when turning on the shower, but it typically only comes when washer is being turned on the hot cycle. I had my plumber come over and he determined it was coming from my water heater. His first suggestion was to try installing an expansion tank. That worked as far as stopping the rattling noise in the venting pipe above the WH. Now I'm hearing a loud banging noise coming from the water heater when the hot water is turned on from the washer, it sounds like someone is hitting it from the inside with a bat.

I had the company that installed the water heater come over and look at it and of course we could not replicate the sound as it normally comes when he was here. We were able to replicate it a bit and he thought it was coming from the baffle. Since the WH is still under warranty we replaced it thinking it might be warped. It did not work. I should note that the banging (and the original rattle) only seems to happen when the water heater is low on water and filling. So, if I had just taken a shower and shortly after tried to run a load in my washer is when you'll hear the original noise or the banging. I know gas water heaters make some noise, this not normal, very loud bang. The water heater company also flushed the WH before installing the new baffle.

I also encountered another strange problem after the expansion tank was installed. Now my water softener is indicating it's softening once every 5 minutes or so. I checked my toilets and every possible place for a leak and we don't think it's a leak. My plumber thinks it's pressure backflowing from the expansion tank into the softener causing it to spin.

Water heater is a year old.
Washing machine is less than a year old, LG top load (not a fan.)
Washing machine has hammer arrestors.
Data tag for WH is below.
Pic of my utility room is also below.
I live in a condo; my water comes in off of a main line and my system is self-contained after that.
I tested the water pressure. Resting is usually around 60PSI, but I do have spikes up to 85PSI a few times a day.

Sorry for the very long post, I wanted to try to include everything. My next course of action per my plumber would be to install a new water heater and a check valve to stop the water softener from metering down when not in use. I trust and like my plumber, I'm just looking for another opinion. I'm just worried I'm going to throw more money at this with the same result, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like there is scale and/or sediment caked on the bottom of the water heater. This causes pockets of steam when the burner is heating water which creates little explosions basically.

Is your water extremely hard when not softened? Are you running softened water to the heater? It looks like you are.

Unless you have very hard water don't run the water heater with softened water.

Thank you for the replies.

It is hard, my city has 22 - 25gpg. Water to the WH is softened. I have a Marlo water softener; I believe it uses a Clack control head. It's from 2014, seems to be working fine as long as I keep a lot of salt in the tank, but I'll pick up a water hardness test kit to be sure the next time I'm at the hardware store. I think the original sound of the shaking in the vent pipes was the baffle rattling. The new noise is just like GReynolds929 described, an explosion and almost like something hitting the side of the tank

Forgot this portion - My water softener stopped randomly indicating it was softening when I closed the inlet valve to the WH so it would make sense that somehow the new expansion tank is causing it to meter down, never did that before.

Expansion tank doesn't do anything to the flow there teed off the cold water line and expansion of the water is taken up by expanding the bladder. Do you know when the heater was flushed it was completely drained before flushing?

only seems to happen when the water heater is low on water and filling.
Not sure what you meant by this but the WH doesn't empty when there is a call for hot water. As you use hot water, the tank immediately fills with cold water. In other words, your tank should always be full.

Unfortunately I can't answer your question but i would find this strange if it only happens when you use the washing machine. If the source is the WH, I would expect the same behavior from any appliance/fixture that uses similar volumes of hot water.

Any chance that there are vibrations being generated elsewhere and the sound is amplified by the WH ?

Yeah, I worded that wrong, apologies. It only seems to happen after a lot of hot water has been used and the water heater burner is on. We did hear it one time when the shower was turned on as well. After the expansion tank was installed, we no longer hear the rattling in the vent pipes, just very loud popping noises inside the tank, like someone is hitting the side of it with a baseball bat. This again only happens when burner is on and the washing machine (hot cycle) starts. I don't think the noise is coming from anywhere but the tank. The rattling in the vents sound like it was possibly the baffle shaking inside of the WH tank. I am not a handy person, so apologies if any of this is described in a poor way.

Heater if full of minerals. Water is being trapped in the thick minerals. It flashes into steam that is where all the popping and hissing coming from. Post a question about your softener in that forum list brand and model.

you must have a bad water softener if you are getting banging noises out of that heater...
you might want to check to see how soft your water is as the heater should not be
banging only since 2021..... We have a lot harder water here at 23 parts hard than
many placed in the USA so I would maybe set the salt level up a few pounds on that
Clack unit

Those LG units SUCK too and will rattle a house with constant pissing on and off cycles
that will drive you nuts....
