    PEX vs CPVC

If you're talking about superior durability, I would say yes - PEX is more durable than CPVC. CPVC is well known for embrittlement as it approaches 10 years and worse, particularly for hot water pipes. John

Kitchen sink draining slowly. Need help.

I have no experience with them, but there are enzymatic drain cleaners sold which are supposed to be completely harmless to pipes. John

Adding air to Amtrol - full drain?

Yes to 'I can check/adjust air with the system only depressurized" or yes to 'I must drain the tank of all water from the manifold". "Daylight" might be above the manifold" - I'll have to see where the heights are. The house is in my wife's, BIL's, and SIL's names after their father died, and...

Adding air to Amtrol - full drain?

My brother in law's well pump is short cycling (5 seconds) when he runs any water. His 20 gallon Amtrol tank is 15 years old so I know it's reaching the end of its life, but I thought I would try to adjust the air pressure before replacing it because it's in a crawl space. Can I just shut the...

I can't answer your question but that is disturbing to hear. John

Interesting find at HD PEX A pipes

While in Home Depot today, I passed through the plumbing dept. and noticed some Apollo brand PEX A along with some expansion fittings and T's. Oddly, there were two types of Apollo brand PEX A - a translucent white pipe that looked and felt like Uponor and a solid white pipe that looked like PEX...

    Copper sweating not working

It's hard to say what went wrong without being there, but other than scrupulous cleaning of the pipe and valve and using quality flux and solder, my best guess is that it's a heat issue - as in not enough. The valve body is a big heat sink, and where it's pretty easy to solder a pipe into a low...

    Shower valves

Thanks John, after reading your warning I looked up that valve, and you probably saved me from (at minimum) twisting the tubes or worse. I'll heat the bonnet thoroughly before rotating. John

    Shower valves

Like a copy of the Delta - will Delta parts fit it? Thanks for info on the Moen, I'll pick up a cartridge for him next week. Strange that the house was built in 1993 and it seems the builder used two different valves? It's possible the main bath was replaced but I won't be able to check until...

    Shower valves

My son has a problem with a stiff shower valve, and he sent me a pic. It's made by Comco which I've never heard of. Are these any good? A generic version of a different brand? There's no direct access behind the shower so I'm not thrilled about the prospect of replacing the whole valve...

Pro press vs solder, from a homeowners perspective

Even if properly pressed, I see 14 O-Rings holding back the pressure in a one foot square area.. I wonder if they found that with a stethoscope? What a shame. John

How to drain this for soldering?

Regarding the Bites in confined (inaccessible) spaces, I confess I would never use one there, but they *are* code allowed in most places. AFAIK, the only way they fail is when not installed properly, and that means making sure the pipe is deburred and smoothed. If you sanded, that's fine as...

Pro press vs solder, from a homeowners perspective

I agree it's like riding a bike, but some people were never very good at riding bikes or sweating pipes. For the latter, the propress is a great tool. I'm not against tools - for PEX I bought a powered expansion tool and heads, but those are necessary to make (what I consider) the best PEX...

Pro press vs solder, from a homeowners perspective

"In my opinion it is much faster to cut and propress again than it is to unsweat a fitting, clean it, prep to solder and start over." I guess that depends on how good you are at sweating. A redo with propress also means cutting, remeasuring, and replacing a section or more of pipe - plus...

Uponor PEX issues - 5 leaks in 2 months. House built in 2015. Need advice.

Certainly provide the bad section as they require, but if it's a larger section that was removed, I would keep a part of it in case the sample you send them gets "lost". If they allow a repipe claim, I would see if I could settle with Uponor for a payment settlement instead and have someone...
