I pulled the pvc pipe out. There is no washer or gasket, it was just pushed into the metal pipe. It didn't leak prior to me taking the drain out. Should there be a washer or gasket between the white pipe and the trap?

Before removing the old drain this did not leak, but now it leaks where the pvc meets the metal pipe. Any suggestion? Am I missing something? Is it just not pushed in far enough? I haven't installed the new drain because I want to figure this out first obviously.
