    Hello Gary and others, I figured out what the problem was. The filter is actually going to be fine, the cartridge that was in it was defective. It is a rolled paper(?) filter and one or two layers had com free in the center of the filter, blocking the flow of water out of the filter housing...

    Hmm so the going wisdom is to not worry about putting the overflow drain tube into a drain. So if it did overflow then it would damage anything around it. Now that I think of it, the furnace and water heater overflow drains are just hanging down in the same way...no drain involved. OK, so...
