Where would the leak happen related to the check valve?

Below is a quote form the "Submersible Pumps and multiple check valves" sticky thread:

There are only two kinds of valves in existence, those that leak and those that will leak. The minute one of them starts dragging or leaking, which they will, many problems arise.

Would the leak come from the threads where the valve is installed/connected to existing plumbing or or they referring to a leak inside the valve?

I am not the author, but my take is the leak would primarily be across the seal of the valve.

Once water hammer becomes a problem, it can also result in fractured fittings causing leaks to the atmosphere.
