Use a push in tub drain on overflow

I'd like to be able to shut the overflow and noticed that the pop up drain I was installing would also fit the overflow. Can I use another pop up drain and shoe for the overflow? I would then run it to the T and have my plumber hook it up to the house waste as he would if I used a overflow plate. Thanks for any input!
