Hello from the new guy...

We have a basement and single level, the upstairs bathroom has no draining issues, not does the basement bathroom or washer. The kitchen sink and bar room sink can't seem to drain, they ultimately do, but extremely slowly. Have not tried the dishwasher...

Naturally, we have tried a bunch of remedies to include a snake. The roof vent is clear as well, have been treating is the last few days with the Zep Drain Care and boiling water, etc. All administered from the kitchen sink. It was snaked from the basement access below the sink, there was some hard, dark coloured stuff... just baffled as everywhere else, the draining is fine.

Any ideas? Thanks!!!

Kitchen sink = grease, Snaking in most cases as well as chemicals are useless. Jetting is the way to go

Stop with the chemicals, they never work. The block most likely at a tee or a wye. Snaking it just goes past the wye.

  1. Let the sink drain overnight. When you have not used the drain for a long time, how much water can you pour from a bucket fairly quickly into the sink before you see backup?
  2. If there is a disposal, instead remove the rubber thing and look for the backup starting into the disposal instead if you can.
  3. Is the drain pipe right under the sink visible in the basement, or is it concealed by wall covering?
  4. If visible, does the pipe continue into the basement floor?
  5. What material is that pipe? Steel, copper, or plastic?

The purpose of knowing the volume of water is to estimate how far down the blockage is. I would guess on the order of one gallon, but your measurement might show something different.

To measure the pour, one way is to fill a 5 gallon bucket to about 4 gallons, and mark the height. Then add water to bring the water level to the mark.

Another is to weigh the bucket of water before and after the pour.

And in response to your question, not unusual.

I snkaed again at the access and used one of those hydro things as far as I could, maybe I did not give it long enough blasts though.... plastic pipe, can see it all the way from the cabinet down to the floor, it is exposed. Just poured a couple gallons of hot water down the drain and hasn't backed up yet, think it is getting close though because I can hear it gurgling in the bar sink. The water pours freely down to the basement. Appreciate the help on this, you guys are very generous. Will continue to pursue the advice.

just a follow up.... ran a water jet thru this pipe, it flowed well and then ran the faucet well past the stage of back up prior to the jetting and it seems to be ok for now. Really appreciate the advice and generosity from you guys
