Quick background: we built our house (6 yrs), including electrical and plumbing (PEX). When it came time for appliances and fixtures, in our exhausted state and ignorance of water softeners, we said to the big box store, "we'll take that $395 job." A less than 1 cu. ft. cabinet style, hyped at "30,000 gpg capacity." Our well water hardness was reported to be 38 gpg; it was 64 gpg. OK. We had a 10 yr old washer, and combined with the undersized softener's almost daily midnight regens, we were using 190 gal/day (measured), and 200 pounds of salt per month. So we gradually educated ourselves, thanks to this forum and the generous patience of its experts.

We ended up with a twin tank, 64000 grain softener (Clack WS1-TT, the largest our laundry area could accommodate); a Navien NPE240A to replace the old 40 gallon tank type water heater (to gain space), and (drum roll) a new, high efficiency LG washer.

Our current water usage has dropped to 139 gal/day, and salt consumption to 130 pounds/month. Thanks again to the forum.
